India has made considerable progress in social and economic development in recent decades like improvement in indicators such as life expectancy, infant mortality, and literacy. However, improvement in women’s health, particularly in Haryana, has a long way to go. India is one of the few countries in the world where males significantly outnumber females, and its maternal mortality rates in rural areas are among the world's highest. Females experience more episodes of illness than males and are less likely to receive medical treatment before the illness is well advanced.
Dr Pakhee Aggarwal, Senior Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Fortis Memorial Research Institute, Gurugram, said “Throughout In my practice I have seen a higher incidence of PCOD, heavy menstrual bleeding and uterine fibroids in women of Haryana. Irregular menstrual bleeding is very common amongst young girls and excess bleeding can lead to anaemia. This affects the overall growth and health of a woman. Through our camp in Rohtak, we want to spread awareness amongst young girls that a lot of these diseases show early symptoms that can be tackled through lifestyle changes and appropriate medication at an early stage. If diagnosed at a later stage, these diseases can lead to hormonal imbalance and create fertility and pregnancy problems. We are committed to spreading awareness in Haryana as we feel the ladies here are conservative when it comes to discussing their health issues. It is important to spread awareness regarding early diagnosis and treatment. Prevention is better than cure.”
Dr Poonam Bhanwala, Principal, Government PG College for Women, Rohtak said, “We aim to educate our students on their health and hygiene. We have noticed that girls are often reluctant to discuss their Gynae health issues and do not consult a doctor. We want to educate the girls today so that they and their families can lead a healthy life. It is important to conduct regular checkups so that our girls can lead a healthy life.
